VPN Money-Back Guarantees Compared: How to Get a Refund
Compare VPN money-back guarantees from Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, NordVPN, PureVPN and CyberGhost. Windows, first-purchase rules, app-store exclusions and the steps to claim a refund, checked 6 Nov 2026.
VPN money-back guarantees are not a single 30-day rule. Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and NordVPN publish a 30-day window on eligible first purchases. PureVPN lists 31 days. CyberGhost splits it: 14 days on monthly plans and 45 days on plans of six months or longer, per its refund policy (checked 6 November 2026).
Here's the catch most "risk-free" badges skip. Turning off auto-renew is not a refund. App Store and Google Play buys usually follow the store's rules, not the VPN's website promise. Renewals are often excluded. Indian cards pay in USD plus forex markup and GST on that markup, and a USD refund can land as a different ₹ amount after FX.
Use the table below, then the steps and proof list. That is how you turn a VPN money-back guarantee into an actual trial instead of a sunk bill.
CyberGhost is the outlier worth planning around. A monthly test gets two weeks. A six-month or longer plan gets 45 days. Same brand, different clock.
First-purchase rules (and what "initial" really means)
Almost every VPN refund policy in this set is built around the first paid term, not every charge forever.
Surfshark limits the guarantee to the initial purchase and one refund per service; recurring payments are non-refundable (Terms §4, updated 13 July 2026). NordVPN says the same for new subscriptions: once the plan renews, that renewal is outside the money-back policy unless local law says otherwise. PureVPN's refund page states the 31-day policy does not apply to renewal payments. Proton requires both the cancellation and the refund request inside the 30-day window, once per user (Proton Terms, modified 5 November 2026).
ExpressVPN is stricter on history: the guarantee is for first-time users, and people (or payment accounts) who already received a refund are ineligible. Its Terms also say the Money-Back Guarantee does not cover renewal purchases or gift / redemption codes. Separately, ExpressVPN's money-back FAQ says that if a subscription renews when you did not intend it to, you have 14 days from that renewal to request a full refund. Treat that as a renewal-specific claim path, not a fresh 30-day trial every year.
Our take: assume first website purchase only. Screenshot the checkout total and the refund line before you pay. Pair this with how to choose a VPN so the window tests the right use case, not a random app install.
What the guarantee usually excludes
App stores break the website promise more often than any other detail.
Surfshark, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, NordVPN and PureVPN all push Apple App Store and (in most cases) Google Play or Amazon Appstore refunds back to those stores. PureVPN also marks Coinpayment and some checkout methods as non-refundable. Surfshark excludes prepaid cards, gift cards, anonymous Dedicated IP and Alternative ID add-ons. Proton will not refund cash or bank-transfer payments. CyberGhost excludes physical gift cards and third-party sellers: you deal with that seller.
Disabling auto-renew is not a refund request. CyberGhost says so in plain language. Proton's cancel flow stops future charges and leaves you on the plan until the cycle ends. You still need a separate refund ask inside the window if you want the money back.
Sale and Black Friday stickers rarely rewrite the refund clock. The window still starts at purchase. What can change is eligibility if a promo's fine print opts out of the money-back guarantee (ExpressVPN flags that for some campaigns). Check the checkout terms on big sale days; our Black Friday software deals guide is the place to compare stack rules, not a substitute for the refund page.
How to request a VPN refund
Do this in order. Skipping the proof step is how claims stall.
Confirm you bought on the provider website (or an eligible billing partner), not only through an in-app store.
Check the calendar against the table above. Monthly CyberGhost buyers have 14 days; everyone else in this set has roughly a month, PureVPN 31, CyberGhost long plans 45.
Turn off auto-renew in the account portal so a second charge does not land while you wait.
Open live chat or the support form the brand names. Surfshark, ExpressVPN and NordVPN steer refunds through chat. PureVPN asks for email to help@purevpn.com with your VPN username. CyberGhost accepts chat, ticket or support@cyberghost.ro. Proton: contact support after you cancel (website) or follow Apple / Google paths for store buys.
Ask clearly for a refund under the money-back guarantee. Have the order or reference number ready.
Save the chat transcript, ticket ID and a screenshot of the refund confirmation email.
Watch the original payment method. Banks can take several business days; PureVPN says up to 30 days for the credit to appear; NordVPN cites up to 10 business days after processing.
For App Store buys, cancel in Apple Subscriptions, then use reportaproblem.apple.com (Proton's guide spells this out). For Google Play, use Play's refund tools within their window, or the VPN's support where the brand allows it (Surfshark and NordVPN both mention helping on Play after 48 hours in some cases).
Proof that speeds up support
Keep the order number, payment last-four digits, purchase timestamp, plan name, and the chat or ticket ID. Indian card statements that show the USD amount and forex line help if the credited ₹ looks off after FX.
Five-minute refund checklist
Buy on the VPN website when you want the published VPN money-back guarantee.
Note the exact window (14 / 30 / 31 / 45) for your plan length.
In week one, test the jobs you care about: bank site on café Wi-Fi, one streaming app, a call on travel data.
Calendar the deadline three days early.
Cancel auto-renew, then request the refund (two steps).
Keep order number + transcript until the credit posts.
Treat the money-back window as a paid trial with homework, not a vibe check. Shortlist two audited apps from how to choose a VPN, buy the long term on the website, and keep only the one that works on your devices and services before the clock runs out. Prefer CyberGhost's 45-day path when you need more than a month to test streaming across countries. Prefer Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN or NordVPN when a clean 30-day first-purchase rule is enough. PureVPN's 31-day page is fine if you accept the renewal and payment-method exclusions.
Skip in-app subscriptions when the whole point of the purchase is the provider's published refund. Skip any plan you will not actually test in week one. Stack sale pricing only after you have read the refund line; how to save money on software subscriptions still applies on renewal day.
Browse the VPN hub for current offers, then use the checklist once. A VPN money-back guarantee only saves money when you claim it with dates, a receipt and a clear ask.
FAQs
Usually no under the standard guarantee. Surfshark says it may consider a discretionary pro-rata refund later if the service was unavailable and you contacted them. Proton and others leave post-window refunds to their sole discretion. Local consumer law can still apply in your country. After the published days, expect a no unless you have a documented outage trail.
