A Secret Key and Travel Mode on every plan
Every 1Password account is protected by two secrets: your account password and a Secret Key, which 1Password says adds 128 bits of entropy. Individual and Families share the same core, as listed on the pricing page on 4 October 2026:
- apps for macOS, iOS, watchOS, Windows, Android and Linux, plus Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox and Brave extensions
- unlimited devices, according to 1Password's membership page
- Watchtower alerts for weak or reused passwords and breached websites
- sharing with anyone, even people without 1Password, with expiry dates and a share history
- Travel Mode, which hides selected vaults when you cross a border
- 1GB of document storage per person and 24/7 support by email, forum or social media
- developer tools for SSH, Git commit signing and the command line
Item history is saved automatically, so you can undo a change or restore a deleted item.
Families raises the seat count to five people. It adds five guest accounts, unlimited shared vaults and admin controls to add, remove or recover members, and each person keeps a private vault.
What each plan costs in year one, and after
Prices as listed on 1Password's personal pricing page and business pricing page on 4 October 2026, in US dollars, with monthly rates taken from each page's Monthly toggle. Only Individual and Families have a first-year price, and only for new customers on annual billing; their up-front figures are the monthly rate times 12. 1Password doesn't publish a separate renewal price, but its FAQ calls $3.99 and $5.99 the regular prices, so the struck-through figure is genuine. Teams Starter Pack takes up to 10 extra seats at $4.99 a month each, for 20 members at most.
Pay yearly, buy on the web, and ask about work first
Annual billing is the biggest lever. Year one of Individual costs $35.88 paid yearly against $59.88 at $4.99 a month, and Families costs $53.88 against $95.88.
Subscribe on 1Password.com: the pricing page says promotions aren't available through Google Play, the Apple App Store or other app stores.
Treat the 14-day trial as the refund window you won't get later. The first invoice arrives within 48 hours of the trial ending, and annual plans then bill on that same date each year, so put the anniversary in your calendar. Avoiding unused SaaS subscriptions is worth a read if a forgotten renewal has caught you before.
Two adults pay less on one Families plan, $4.49 a month in year one, than on two Individual plans at $5.98 combined, and Families leaves three seats spare.
Before paying, check whether something better applies to you:
- Your employer runs 1Password Business: every member gets a complimentary Families membership.
- GitHub Education has verified you as a post-secondary student: the GitHub Student Developer Pack includes free 1Password Individual.
- You're a journalist: 1Password says it can make your individual account free once you qualify.
- You run a nonprofit: you may be eligible for a one-time credit or discounted accounts.
Families is the plan most households should buy
Buy Families as soon as a second person needs a vault. In year one it's $1.50 a month more than Individual, and it covers five people, each with a private vault, plus guest accounts and recovery for anyone who forgets their account password or can't find their Secret Key. Split five ways, the regular $5.99 comes to about $1.20 a person each month.
Buy Individual, paid yearly, if the vault is only yours.
At work, the Teams Starter Pack's flat $24.95 a month undercuts Business from the third user. Pay for Business when you need SSO through Okta or Entra ID, custom reports, or free Families plans for your staff.
Skip 1Password if you won't pay for a password manager at all, because neither pricing page lists a free plan.
Whichever plan you pick, run the trial on your real logins first: those 14 days are your one guaranteed free exit, and that's worth more than any 1Password coupon.
