What Pro adds that free Claude doesn't
Claude's Free plan already covers chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory across conversations, connectors to your apps, Artifacts and up to five Projects.
Pro is where the working tools start. Its plan card lists:
- More usage, which the pricing FAQ puts at no less than 5x Free's per session
- Claude Code, drawing on the same usage pool as your chats
- Research, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, and Claude Science
- The Opus models, plus Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365
- Tasks you can hand off and schedule
Max keeps all of that and sells capacity: 5x or 20x Pro's usage, higher output limits, early access to new features and priority access at high-traffic times. That last perk is Max-only. Max subscribers can also spend up to half their weekly limits on Fable, which Pro reaches only through paid usage credits.

Claude's prices, monthly against annual
Prices as listed on Claude's pricing page on 4 October 2026, in US dollars, excluding tax. Max 20x is from Anthropic's Max plan help article, read the same day; it says those are web prices and mobile pricing may vary. Anthropic publishes no separate renewal rates.
Cutting the Claude bill without a code
Anthropic is blunt about it: "We do not offer standard discounted pricing" on its paid plans, and its occasional limited-time promotions are announced through official channels. So the savings come from how you buy.
Try Pro monthly first. If you stay, switch to annual under Settings > Billing and Anthropic credits your unused monthly time toward the first annual invoice, so that first month isn't wasted. Annual Pro doesn't trap you either. Upgrade to Max mid-year and the unused time is credited toward the new plan.
Running out of usage a few times a month doesn't justify jumping from $20 to $100. Paid plans can switch on usage credits at standard API rates instead.
Teams save $60 per Standard seat a year on annual billing, $240 against $300. Registered nonprofits do far better: Team costs $8 per user a month, or $3 in low- or middle-income countries, as listed on Anthropic's nonprofit page on 4 October 2026.
Anthropic's pricing page lists no individual student discount; its Education plan is sold to whole universities.
Which Claude plan should you buy?
A few questions a day? Free handles that, with web search, memory and file creation already included.
Pro earns its keep if you write, research or code with Claude most days, and certainly if you want Claude Code, which Free leaves out. Pay monthly for a month, watch whether the weekly cap bites, then switch to annual.
Max 5x is for people who hit Pro's limits every week, usually in long Claude Code sessions. Max 20x only makes sense if Claude runs most of your working day; one month of it costs the same as a full year of annual Pro.
Two or more colleagues should look at Team, where an annual Standard seat comes with SSO and central billing. A nonprofit with fewer than 20 people can verify through Goodstack first and skip list price entirely.
If you can't commit for a year, pay monthly and accept the extra $40. Otherwise, annual Pro is as close to a Claude coupon as Anthropic gets.
